You can read all of our picks for “Underrated Scene Of The Week” here. This week’s underrated scene comes from a K-Drama that deserves much more love and attention than it received at the time of airing: “The Killer’s Shopping List”. With its star-studded cast (Lee KwangSoo, AOA’s Seolhyun, Jin HeeKyung, Park JiBin), bite-sized format (8 episodes of approximately 60 minutes each), and excellent storytelling, “The Killer’s Shopping List” has something for every viewer. Whether you’re a fan of mystery, comedy, or romance, this drama will leave you satisfied. Spoiler Alert! “The Killer’s Shopping List” revolves around a shopping mart run by Jeong MyeongSook (played by Jin HeeKyung) and named after her son, Ahn DaeSung (played by Lee KwangSoo). After a period of decreased sales owing to competition from neighboring marts who were quick to adopt home delivery options, DaeSung Mart rebrands to MS Mart. However, their short-lived success soon goes down the drain when a murder is linked to the mart. With the killer’s shopping list as the only hint towards his identity, DaeSung sets out to protect the mart and the people he loves. In episode 4 of “The Killer’s Shopping List”, DaeSung, MyeongSook, and AHee (played by Seolhyun) decide on a linear approach to finding the culprit, starting from the employees of the mart themselves. Right off the bat, DaeSung doubts Fish (played by Park JiBin), the new recruit responsible for the fish section of the mart. Their shopping list frequently includes nude, high-elasticity stockings, and hot glue guns, which raises suspicion, especially since the murder weapon was a similar pair of stockings. Curious and desperate, DaeSung decides to tail Fish in episode 3, going as far as snooping around their apartment in their absence. If being a peeping Tom wasn’t enough, DaeSung follows him out that night, joined by AHee. Much to his surprise, he discovers that Fish leads a double life, dressed up as a woman. His mind immediately goes to Buffalo Bill, the psychopathic serial killer from “The Silence of the Lambs” but what he completely misses are glaring clues like the trans flag in his room and posters of films like “Call Me By Your Name”, indicating the possibility that Fish identifies as queer. DaeSung perceives Fish’s gender expression as downright perversion, amplifying his certainty that they are the killer. Not only does this scene highlight the general ignorance in society towards the queer community due to the lack of education and awareness but also creates an environment for learning. In episode 4, DaeSung confronts Fish, accusing them of holding Yul (played by Ahn SeBin) hostage. His mother follows suit, knocking them unconscious with a tazer. It is only when Fish reluctantly reveals their relationship with the murder victim Lee KyungA and presents documents of their transsexuality as evidence that DaeSung gets off their back. While DaeSung is obviously not a politically correct character, he is definitely not queerphobic or hateful either. Although it is regrettable than Fish was unwittingly outed, DaeSung shows deep remorse for his actions, admitting his immaturity. The next day, he still feels apologetic but doesn’t treat Fish any differently than before, which proves that his misconception of Fish was not due to a lack of acceptance but rather, a lack of understanding. This is what makes DaeSung such an incredible character and the drama, an effective commentary on society. Lee KwangSoo and Park JiBin do an incredible job at their respective characters, imbuing them with realism and grace, so much so that they become a part of viewers’ lives. You cannot help but fall for the endearing charm of both actors, especially when they share dynamic teamwork in the second half. We’re going to miss DaeSung and Fish’s banter more than anything else!
