Here are 5 of the most beloved cherry blossom scenes in K-Dramas!
1. “Our Beloved Summer”
One of the most memorable scenes from the romantic comedy “Our Beloved Summer” involves cherry blossoms, but with a twist. Choi Ung (played by Choi WooShik) pleads with Kook YeonSu (played by Kim DaMi) to go see the cherry blossoms. Kook YeonSu is visibly disinterested, but Choi Ung is unrelenting. With this being their last chance to admire the cherry blossoms (it’ll rain soon) and YeonSu deferring their plans every year, it was but natural for him to sulk. When YeonSu finds him at the end of the day, he is still pouty. However, she has a pretty pink surprise for him. Putting out her closed palm before Ung, YeonSu reveals cherry blossom petals and showers him with them. Ung might not have been able to go to the cherry blossoms, but YeonSu brought the cherry blossoms to him.
2. “Goblin”
“Goblin” employs the metaphor of cherry blossoms as the emblem of first love throughout the narrative. Ji EunTak (played by Kim GoEun) says in the very first episode that if you catch a falling cherry blossom petal, your first love will come true. In episode 15, Kim Shin (played by Gong Yoo) asks his first love, EunTak, to marry him.
Cherry blossoms also hold a deep significance for Wang Yeo/Grim Reaper (played by Kim MinJae and Lee DongWook) and Kim Sun/Sunny (played by Kim SoHyun and Yoo InNa), symbolizing their first loves: each other.
3. “It’s Okay To Not Be Okay”
The very first time Ko MunYoung (played by Seo YeaJi) and Moon GangTae (played by Kim SooHyun) lay eyes on each other, cherry blossoms rain down on them, turning the world pink. The rosy imagery of this scene is in stark contrast with the darkness in both of their lives, but it certainly implies the start of something new. As they stand speechlessly before each other, Ko MunYoung breaks the silence by evoking “destiny”. While her comment might have been laced with sarcasm at the time, destiny is exactly what those cherry blossoms represented.
4. “Doom At Your Service”
Just like Goblin can make cherry blossoms bloom at his happiest, Myul Mang (played by Seo InGuk) can take you back to spring on a whim. While taking a walk down a barren road, Tak DongKyung (played by Park BoYoung) gushes over spring and cherry blossoms, wishing she could have seen more of them last spring. As Doom is at her service, after all, Myul Mang traces back time to bring spring to his beloved. With the cherry blossoms in full bloom, falling ever so softly around them, DongKyung confesses her love for Myul Mang.
5. “Business Proposal”
Finally, this list would not be complete without its latest addition, “Business Proposal”. Much to the joy of viewers all over the world, “Business Proposal” gives one of the most satisfying K-Drama endings of the year so far. Spoiler Alert! Kang TaeMu (played by Ahn HyoSeop), who had left for the United States to get his grandfather treated, returns to South Korea just as dating rumours break out, linking him to a cellist in New York. Upon meeting Shin HaRi (played by Kim SeJeong), he has one thing on his mind: the grand proposal. As they walk under a canopy of cherry blossoms, hand-in-hand, TaeMu pops the question. HaRi, however, doesn’t say yes (well, not technically). Instead, she looks on with endless love in her eyes as he puts the ring on her finger. They seal their love with a kiss in the delicate embrace of the cherry blossoms. What is your favourite cherry blossom scene in a K-Drama? Tell us in the comments down below!
